Essential DotNetNuke settings guide

After successfully installing DotNetNuke there are several essential settings that we recommend for all DotNetNuke websites:

1.  Add user accounts: if you have followed our recommendation to not use "host" and "admin" as user names while installing (since everyone knows these are the default user names), you should now add an account called "host" and an account called "admin" so that no one else can register with these user names.

2.  Disable registration: if you dont need users registering on your website then on the site settings page, set user registration to "none".

3.
Copyright credits: on the host settings page, turn the show copyright credits setting off.  This means that if a security vunerability is found for the version of dotnetnuke that you are using (a rare occurance), then no one can easily find out that you are using a vunerable version.

4.  Caching and compression: Purchase and install the Snapsis Pageblaster module (read our review) for an amazing boost to your website's speed and responsiveness.

5.  Friendly URLs: Purchase and install the iFinity URL Master module (read our review) for perfect SEO friendly and human friendly URLs.

6.  Turn autoupgrade off: under some conditions, your DotNetNuke website can launch the autoupgrade process when it should not be launched.  This is extremely rare, but we can avoid it completely by opening your web.config and changing under appSettings the line <add key="AutoUpgrade" value="true" /> to <add key="AutoUpgrade" value="false" />.
